Loneliness, suicidal thoughts, bullying, inferiority complex, dying inside, all of this now has become a common problem – where everyday the person next to you in this world suffers. Where one suffers from depression, another starves themselves, where one suffers from bullying, the person next to them has no option but to end their life.
There are so many series and movies produced which are so relatable to us and we feel as if they were made for us, and also, these shows somewhere bring in some inner peace and motivation. Of course, who likes to watch sad and depressing shows, but who knows if it begins with the emotions felt by you?
So here are some of the most depressing and saddest series/movies:
1. 13 Reasons Why
Starring with Katherine Langford, Bradon Flynn, Alisha Boe, Dylann Minnette, and others, who don’t know about 13 reasons why. Overall, it’s one of the most depressing shows ever made. From Hannah’s suicide to Jessica’s rape, from Tyler’s sexual assault to Monty’s death, and from Bryce’s murder to Justin’s difficult life and his end. This show gives another kind of goosebumps, excitement, emotions and the thought of committing suicide.
The show is adopted from the novel “13 Reasons Why” by Jay Asher, about a girl named Hannah Baker who had 13 reasons to commit suicide. Hannah’s role was played by Katherine Langford, who appeared in the first two series. After this, the other two seasons revolve around the lives of the students, and with the guilt there, life moves on. The show represents teenage depression, school bullying, rape, teenage pregnancy, drugs, violence, guilt, etc. The series is very sensitive and people must have courage and guts to watch it. Also, the series used some of the best songs, especially Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met“.
2. Bojack Horseman
Starting with Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Aaron Paul, and Paul F. Tompkins, this series, despite being a cartoon, Bojack Horseman, is one of the most depressing shows which will definitely make you feel down in the dumps. The show is funny and uses animals for the characters, but it also touches on dark subjects, including depression, abuse, and substance use, and certain things in it will make you question your own life.
Some of the saddest parts of the show include Sarah Lynn’s passing and the movement of Bojack’s mom recognising him.
3. Grey’s Anatomy
Grey’s Anatomy is an American medical drama series starring Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T. R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr. and others.
Because the series is set in a hospital, it is expected that there would be a lot of sad moments, but unfortunately, there are a number of heartbreaks that one couldn’t imagine. Surgical interns and their supervisors embark on a medical journey where they become part of heart-wrenching stories and make life-changing decisions in order to become the finest doctors.
After the death of the character on whom the title of the series is named, who gets himself into a car accident which leaves him with a terrible brain injury and that was the most heartbreaking moment.. There are lots of goodbyes in the series, but watching one of the favourite characters perish in that way is unforgivable.
4. The Notebook
Starring Rachel McAdams, Ryan GOSLING, James Marsden.
The Notebook is a romantic movie which depicts the love story of Allie and Noah, where their families couldn’t agree to their marriage because of their social status and they had to leave each other.
The story begins with an old man reading a notebook to his wife, in which the love story of Noah and Allie is written, and then he explains how, despite staying far away when they meet, and when Allie is about to get married to someone else, their destiny changes and then they reunite. In the end, it is revealed that the woman is suffering from a disease and she could not remember and often had a habit of forgetting things. But after hearing this tragic love story, she sees her reflection in the story and she realises that she is the girl in this love story and the man who is narrating her is the hero.
5. The Fault in our Stars
Starring with Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and others.
It is another depressing movie which depicts the lives of two teenagers who are in love and suffering from cancer.
The girl’s only wish is to visit Amsterdam to meet her favourite author. The boy, Gus accompanies him there, where they meet. Unfortunately, after returning day by day, Gus’s health detoriates and he becomes closer to death. He arranges his own funeral and dies 8 days later.
Sitting under the sky Hazel reads the letter, in which Gus accepts his fate and professes his love for Hazel. It concludes with, “Okay, Hazel Grace?” As Hazel finishes the letter, she lies on her back on her lawn and looks up at the stars, responding, “Okay.“
6. Five Feet Apart
Starting with Cole Spouse, Haley Lu Richardson.
The story describes the romantic relationship of two patients, Stella and Will, suffering from cystic fibrosis, who try to have a relationship despite always being forced to stay a certain distance, 6 feet away from each other.
Where one of them survives and the other dies is not shown, but it is heavily implied that he will not survive much longer.
