The Arabic word, Jama Masjid means Friday Mosque.
Jama Masjid was constructed in a period of 1650-1656 by The Famous Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Jama Masjid is the best example to show beauty of Mughal Architecture.

Jama Masjid is the India’s largest Muslim worship place, which has a capacity of more than 25000 devotees and is the site of Huge communal prayers.
Jama masjid can be called as “Masjid-i-jehan-numa” (Mosque commanding the view of the world.)
The Mosque was one of the last monuments build under Shah jahan’s rule, after its completion it served as the royal mosque of the Emperor’s until the end of the Mughal period. It was a symbol of Mughal power in India, as well as Karen’s political importance. Jama Masjid was built by 5000 artisans/workers and it spent 1 million rupees.
The mosque houses thousands of pilgrims each year on the holy occasion of Eid to offer special Namaz in the morning. The Jama Masjid is approximately 2200 square meters in size, with three gateways, four towers, and two 40-meter-tall minarets.
To reach the entrance one needs to climb 121 steps which are filled with food and book stalls in the evening. The mass of Central Dome is an outstanding example of Islamic architecture which inturn is known for its symmetry.
Jama Masjid is built of sandstone and white marble with architectural masterpiece and is an imposing structure with significant Islamic relics like the red beard hair of Prophet Muhammad, his footwear and foot mark along with an old Quran transcript on a deer skin preserved inside.
This Grand and impressive Mosque is visible from a distance of upto 5 kilometres and neighbours places like the Red Fort.
The open courtyard in front of the Masjid has an ablution tank with a fountain in the centre. This has been installed for the rituals that will take place prior to the Namaz. In this courtyard, the main has been divided into two halls, which have been further split into seven bays of ornamental pillars.
The floor of the mosque is beautifully decorated with black Marbles and there is 899 markings for devotees.
Such beautiful is the artchitecture of this mosque. You may not know but it is the largest one in the entire Indian subcontinent!
