That image or picture, that takes away your breath and pushes you down into an ultra level of fascination, inspiration and aweness, making you feel lost and found in the insight of the creator’s idea, is what you will often find in the works of the Dutch Haute Couturist, Iris Van Herpen.
Haute Couture is the highest form of fashion, wherein every single thing, from idea to stitching, is done by the designer alone her with his/her team. It is a garment with a beauty never seen, and delicacy and strength never known. Ralph Lauren, Rahul Mishra, Christian Dior are some of the Haute Couturists.
Iris Van Herpen has such a hallucinatory, dream like, depth in her works, that it is hard to believe if it is real and further, how was it really made!
Her collection, ‘Shifting Souls’ was such an illusionary art, and is one of the best of what she has done.
Iris Van Herpen also has a brand name and a subtly classy logo with the same ethereal view her works carry.
For this year’s Fall, Iris Van Herpen had based her garments on words like, ‘Lightness’ or ‘Freefalls’ or even ‘With the flow’ as she had collaborated with the skydiver who was the freefly world champion in 2012, Domitelli Kiger.
Iris Van Herpen was taken aback by the skydiver’s skills and learned from and saw in her the cusps of freedom and to go beyond one’s boundaries, to fly far far away and touch the space, the soil as if it were never gone.
Iris Van Herpen’s most unique quality is that she amalgamates science, technology with craftmanship and creativity. Her 3D art comes alive on garments with hand stitched works.
Hence, here the most important thing was the material, as skydiving shouldn’t have obviously a heavier one. The first attempt wasn’t a great success; the work didn’t turn out to be very flexible, but with trial and errors, Iris and her team, finally made use of Presley’s plastic, which is recycled ocean plastic, chiffon, and hand embroideries and this resulted into making her Fall 2021 collection, ‘Earthrise’.
She claims that skydiving and haute couture run side by side, they imbue each other, they should be associated with light weights having excellency.
Iris had released a video with the help of Apollo 8. In the video, the skydiver, Domitille Kiger, sky dives at the end, wearing Iris’s collection’s dress and Domitille with this, becomes the first skydiver to sky dive wearing haute couture!
Iris Van Herpen has a very different level of creativity and it was seen in this collection’s dresses, wherein some had flowy chiffon, some with extensive wavy sleeves, some with chest and neck cuts that too in curvy patterns, almost all of them with shades of blue, white and black and with mystical embrioderies and ‘above the clouds‘ experience. With this, she has surpassed all, I swear, all the definitions of fashion.
