Social media, we post a lot of stuff on it but do we think about what is happening to our posts? There are people who use our pictures inappropriately. Let’s know what incidents have happened previously!
We are posting a lot of stuff on social media platforms, but do we think about what is happening to our posts? I guess not. We post without thinking twice about what could happen to our pictures. And as a matter of fact, why should we? It’s our right actually. We can post anything unless it’s not harming someone in any way.
But what we don’t think is that there are people who use our pictures inappropriately. They can edit our pictures in such a way that if someone is going to see them, they will think less of us. And yes, it is illegal. This can be seen more with women, and you know the reason why it happens more with us.
To help you understand that all of this isn’t just a surmise, here are some examples:
1. The Famous 2018 Facebook Photos Leak
In 2018, Facebook kind of got messed up. Facebook had allowed third party apps to just take a limited set of photos and data, of course, for security purposes. But, that’s where the problem was. Due to a major technical issue, the apps somehow got permission to take more photos than they could. The photos of 6.8 million users of Facebook was at a privacy stake!
Also, back in 2017, Facebook had to delete almost 10,000 fake accounts from their network!
2. The 2014 Photo Leakage
2014 turned out to be a humiliating year for some Hollywood actresses, like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Dunst, and a few more. Their personal pictures and videos were accidently leaked from the Apple Icloud and then posted on sites like Reddit. Although it was removed from the sites, Apple truly claimed that there was no bug on their end and stated that either the user might have kept a very easy password or they might have responded to spam emails which said that they were from Apple Company.
Whatever happened was truly the worst photo leak that could ever happen. How impossible the actresses would have felt to walk the next morning out of their houses.
3. Snapchat and Instagram
In 2014, almost 1000 pictures from Snapchat were leaked and posted on sites like viralpop.com.
Instagram’s bug in 2017 led to the leak of 6 million celebrities, including Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian.
In fact, in 2020, a 19-year old from Kozikhode, Kerela, was arrested for retrieving pictures of atleast 15 girls from sites like Instagram and posting them on some other sites with impudent comments.
Not only that, but women have to face a lot of things, like atrocious messages on Instagram or Facebook. It is not okay but since we as a general public cannot do anything, it has become a normal daily routine for us.
In a video of LAKSHAY CHAUDHARY, he talked about Munmun Dutta, an Indian television actress who plays the role of Babita Bhabi in the show, “Tarak Mehta ka Ulta Chashma“. He showed cringe comments on her Instagram posts and how she switched off the comment section to ignore all of these cringes. Just think, if people are leaving such comments on posts, then what about her DMs? I mean, people wouldn’t stop texting her shitty comments?
But why is she ignored? Or why are all those people whose photos got leaked supposed to ignore? Just let go the levels of impudence that were shown to them? Can’t the people who are making them feel that way stop? Do they have any right to harass someone like that on social media?
This all wasn’t acceptable before, now or ever. It was against the law, is against the law and will be forever. Because since nobody doesn’t say anything, it doesn’t mean we cannot.
This article is not written just for you to read, but to understand what is wrong and what is right. Think twice before you text something stupid to someone. And stay alert about your pictures. Check who you are emailing, keep passwords for your photo gallery and speak up!
