Fashion Designing is breath taking. It is couture and quotidian but euphoric pieces with ideas that will make you wear them every day.
So tell me, who’s clothing would you like to wear? Iris Van Herpen’s couture or the patan of patola of Gujarat? Amazing right? Or maybe a designer comes up and grabs the depth of Iris Van Herpen’s idea and art of storytelling of patan patola and makes a whole new garment?! How incredible would that be?
Yes, fashion designing is breath taking. It is couture and quotidian but euphoric pieces with ideas that will make you wear them every day.
There are certainly three things a future fashion designer ought to have: a bit of a good hand at drawing, a fair hold in aptitude for entrance exams, and an enormous amount of passion.
So here are some colleges in India that future fashion designers should look for while filling up their forms for the current academia:
1. NIFT, 16 Campuses
The National Institute Of Fashion Technology is like the IIT in the field of fashion designing. Although NIFT has a stronger withhold in fashion technology (which is using technology to produce, let’s say more eco-friendly fabrics or producing a fabric that has the durability of silk and lightness of cotton), NIFT remains to be a college providing fashion design, jewellery design, fashion textiles and many more.
NIFT’s Bachelor of Design is of 4 years with the first year being a foundational year and the next becoming more specific. It has three levels of entrance exam-the written test which has CAT i.e. Creative Ability test and GAT i.e. General Ability Test, the second is a situation test and the last is personal and group interview.
NIFT applications start in early or mid October and have the written test in February or late January.
2. UID, Gandhinagar
The Unitedworld Institute of Design is one of the colleges of the Karnavati University. This is an exemplary college providing a lot of fashion courses with bachelors of design in fashion being the budding one. They have their test in the month of March with forms coming out in December. Their entrance exams usually have a much harder level with more of a varied knowledge questions asked.
But their evaluation occurs at a comparatively lesser harshness. UID’s punchline, ‘ignite your dreams‘ really means it.
3. CODE, Vivekanada Global University, Jaipur
CODE is the Centre for Design and Excellence and is a college under the VGU and is another good option to look. Here the important point is their B.Des is in Fashion and Textile Design and hence they provide the knowledge of both Fashion designing and Textile designing under the B.Des course. The entrance exam is known as De CODE and has two papers with one being aptitude and the other being creative ability. Their exam dates asked for early February!
4. Parul University, Gujarat
Clearly, it has recently allowed the field of design and is still budding and that’s why it is a good option to consider. Parul University is located in Gujarat in cities like Vadodara, Ahmedabad, etc. It provides B.Des in Fashion design and technology and hence gives knowledge of both fashion design and fashion technology. You can further specialisation in things like fashion design and technology in knitwear or pattern making, etc.
5. Symbiosis International, Pune
Symbiosis has a different exam for design and that is the SEED-Symbiosis Entrance Exam for Design and usually accepts applications in January. It cancelled SEED this year owing to the Covid pandemic, but every year it takes SEED, which is an aptitude and design test, then a studio test and finally a personal interview.
These are the top 5 five colleges worth trying for fashion designing. Apart from them, INIFD and GLS are also good options! Good luck!
